Nicolas Shumway grew up in St. Johns, Arizona, a small community founded by Mexicans and later settled by Mormon pioneers. His father owned a service station and tire shop, and his mother taught grade school music. With majors in Spanish and Music, he graduated with honors from BYU in 1969. For fourteen years, he taught at Yale University where he received tenure and was promoted to full professor. He later accepted an endowed chair at UT-Austin where for eleven years he directed the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies. In 2010, he was appointed Dean of Humanities at Rice University. His book, The Invention of Argentina appeared in 1991 and was recognized by The New York Times as “a notable book of the year.” In 2023, the UK edition of The Economist praised it as a “masterly intellectual and cultural history.” The Education of Joshua Chastain is his first published novel. Shumway retired from Rice in 2020 and currently lives with his husband, Robert Mayott, in Houston, Texas.
