John B. Boles is the William P. Hobby Emeritus Professor of History at Rice University. He taught for four decades at Rice, was editor of the Journal of Southern History from 1983 to 2013, and was elected president of the Southern Historical Association. He directed numerous dissertations at Rice, won multiple teaching awards, received the university’s Meritorious Service Award, its Distinguished Alumni Award, and the alumni association’s Gold Medal. Among his twenty books are University Builder: Edgar Odell Lovett and the Founding of the Rice Institute and Jefferson: Architect of American Liberty.
